Privacy and sun protection made from expanded metal
High concentration is required during meetings. Undesired views and sunshine can be quite counterproductive. Here privacy and sun protection made from expanded metal remedies the situation in a beautiful way. Even office buildings do not want off-the-shelf solutions. With MEVACO expanded metal work becomes a real pleasure.
A great material for creative metalworkers
What does the metal worker, who installed sun and privacy protection in the MEVACO office building - made from MEVACO's own expanded metal - have to bring to the table? Martin Klein chuckles: "It was basically a challenge like any job we take on. But there were possibly more people than usual watching how the job unfolded. Expanded metal is a great material; the associated profile edging can, however, be quite complex depending on the application." The expanded metal used, rhomb 62x28x14, aluminium, powder-coated after production in RAL 9007, thickness: 2.00 mm, was here even a pilot run. This material initially appears somewhat unstable due to the many textures and bridges. To solve this problem, Martin Klein attached a frame to the rear of it in order to ensure a stable final construction. He also realised this so that the attachment is concealed. The entire construction was then coated. The experienced metal worker also had a few extra tips for us, such as using a buzz saw to process the aluminium. Martin Klein also had some advice with regard to the frame: "MEVACO profile edgings are the perfect solution for customers who don't want to produce their own frames. I recommend a frame construction that has been galvanised after production for rust protection purposes in the case of large external panelling."
The only question that Martin Klein, from the Schlierbach company "Hans Klein – Heizung und Sanitär GmbH", was not able to answer was why the meeting room in the MEVACO office building is called "Mozart". He had the rest of the answers like a shot! This is not really that surprising as the metal worker has a huge amount of experience when it comes to expanded metal and perforated sheets. This is surprising as his company was originally solely a heating system installation company.
No off-the-shelf solutions
"This was followed by a sanitary and plumbing department", remembers Martin Klein. Fitting work was already always required. Somewhere along the line we started developing heating control technologies for housing complexes and we produced them ourselves. We were then knee-deep in metal processing: For example, in concealing A/C lines behind perforated sheets. As finding solutions to customer's requests is what we do - you won't find anything off the shelf with us - and as MEVACO is our neighbour, there was nothing standing in the way of a cooperation."
Flexible and sturdy at the same time
Which brings us to the "Mozart" meeting room: It sometimes became warm in there when the sun shone directly in through the windows. Sun and privacy protection were needed and this logically should be made from MEVACO expanded metal -what else ? "I think there were a few more people than usual keeping a close eye on things", laughs Martin Klein. "Mainly because the expanded metal used, rhomb 62x28x14, aluminium, powder-coated after production in RAL 9007, 2.00 mm, was a pilot run. When you feel this material, it comes across as unstable due to the many textures and bridges. There are only a few interspaces that are not punched and interlaced. The final construction needed, however, to be stable. Because aluminium cannot be welded, we decided to attach a frame to the rear of the expanded metal. This was realised so that the attachment is fully concealed. The entire construction was then coated."
Sophisticated and long-lasting
Martin Klein found the buzz saw to be an invaluable tool for this purpose. "We cut steel panels using a thin angle grinder. Aluminium can, in contrast, be ideally processed with a buzz saw." We then had to produce guide rails in order to be able to slide the construction depending on which way the sun was shining. "It became apparent that 1 guide rail would suffice and we could dispense with the second one on the sill. In the end, everything looked very sophisticated – and still does today." Expanded metal ultimately stands out due to its long service life. This is why Martin Klein uses it for all conceivable applications. "We recently used it as panelling for an aquarium. Enough air comes in, in the right areas, thanks to the textures."
Sun protection for Mozart
And he had some more good tips for us. "If you don't want to produce your own profile edgings, the best thing is to use MEVACO profile edgings. I recommend a frame construction that has been galvanised after production for rust protection purposes in the case of large external panelling."All our questions had thus been answered but one. Now put your hand on your heart: Why is the meeting room called "Mozart"? "I really have no idea" admits a chuckling Martin Klein. "But I am sure that the wonderful composer would have enjoyed our sun protection made from expanded metal."
