A sturdy yet delicate barrier

For those driving towards Munich from Ebersberg, there is no avoiding the trunk road 304. As is often the case in Germany, the extremely busy arterial highways pass through the heart of a residential area. Ludwig Dick and his ideas involving perforated sheeting ensure that one can still have a great living standard on Kreillerstrasse in spite of all the traffic.

“The Moosfeld industrial park is not far away, neither are service stations, car dealerships and car washes”, says Ludwig Dick, “the atmosphere can be quiet dreary in certain spots. It is precisely for this reason that it is important to come up with something special for subsidised housing.” Subsidised housing means creating affordable living space in an urban area. To achieve this objective, the Department for Urban Planning and Building Regulation for the City of Munich created a special housing policy action programme. “This means”, according to Ludwig Dick, “that a housing complex such as that on Kreillerstrasse must offer a whole series of different types of apartments, from studio apartments to 4 ½ room apartments.”

The client was TERRA Siedlungs GbR, while Ludwig Dick was responsible for the design in coordination with the client team in the TERRA site office. A fire escape ladder point for the fire brigade was dispensed with. In this case, the fire protection regulations stipulate that a staircase must be used as the second means of escape. “Perforated sheeting thus came into play”, says the architect. “For quite practical reasons as the corridor required an opening to the outside. For this reason, we created the access balcony. This in turn was made from perforated sheeting.” As the practical benefit of perforated sheeting can also be excellently combined with its design advantage. In addition to the light permeability, it also ensures greater noise protection. “The material”, explains Ludwig Dick, “works in the same manner as a sturdy and at the same time delicate barrier.”

And it has a friendly appearance to boot. Aided in this connection by the colour concept selected by Ludwig Dick. “We installed 200 m2 of perforated sheeting in RAL 1018 zinc yellow with the perforation R10 T12 on the balconies”, he recalls. 385m2 of perforated sheeting, also in zinc yellow as well in RAL 1028 melon yellow, with the same perforation were fitted alone on the access balcony. This was customised metal sheeting which was produced by the company Glasl Stahl-Metallbau. “This colouring is one of the main reasons why the housing complex is a preferred photo motif of newspapers and magazines when it comes to subsidised housing. Then they write”, says Ludwig Dick, “this is how good it can look. However, for me only one thing is important, namely that the tenants in the building should feel at ease and at home. And they do.” Immeasurably so!
