Rust in the right place

COR-TEN is a fine grain steel with noble, permanent surface rust. The speed at which this special density iron oxide layer forms depends on the weather conditions. It acts as a barrier layer, which prevents a further access of moist ambient air and thus reduces additional rust formation. As a result, the costs for corrosion protection, such as powder coating or hot-dip galvanizing no longer apply. A very aesthetic surface is achieved due to the natural rust colour.

The material, which was patented in 1932, is used in construction and design oriented areas.

In 1960, the American-Finnish architect Eero Saarinen used COR-TEN as a design element for the façade of the entire John Deere administration building.

This perforated sheet surface developed its own special dynamic in combination with stainless steel in railing construction. The rough, rusty surface forms a stark contrast to the smooth and elegant effect of the stainless steel surface.

In contrast, the result is a very harmonious overall appearance when combined with timber due to its natural colouring.

Whether as privacy protection, a fence element or façade panelling, thanks to its surface COR-TEN offers an interesting alternative to previous materials.
