To design a retirement home so that it fills the residents with a joie-de-vivre is no easy task. This has, however, been clearly achieved in the new state retirement home in Raabs/Thaya in Lower Austria thanks to the skilful interplay of material and colour.
There where Austria ends and the Czech Republic begins is Raabs an der Thaya. Modernity seems to have passed the place by. But what is to be seen here is anything but provincial. The architecture office Edelmüller und Zobl designed here, in 2007, a state retirement home, which would not look out of place in a city. Both ends of the angular wing, which contains the bedrooms, fascinate due to their rich-in-contrast colourfulness. In this connection, it involves, in each case, two balconies linked through emergency exit stairs made from perforated sheeting in front of a timber façade. Or to put it more succinctly: a façade made from exotic wood veneered synthetic resin panels whose colour varies between ruby and magenta. Mint turquoise was used to provide a resplendent contrast to this natural wood hue.
In this connection, Zobl also applied his trademark to the balcony railings. Normally this is a curved corner element without support. Because the perforated sheets of the sun terraces project from the bottom-up, both corner fields had to be provided with and screwed onto a bracket. The persons needing care enjoy the rich-in-contrast ambience and impressive views – for beautiful twilight years.
